Windows 10 update 1909 is now available to install should you have not already installed it.
This small update gives you:
- Online Search in File Explorer
- Alternative Voice Assistants
- Ability to Create a Calendar Event from Taskbar
- Improved Notification Management
- Performance Improvements
- Start Menu Tweaks
How to Update
- Open up Windows Update by searching for “Windows Update” or click Start > Settings > Update & Security
- Then if the update is ready to install, you will see “Feature update to Windows 10, version 1909” with “Download and install now” in blue, click on this to install
Note: If you don’t see the option, click Check for Updates, and then reboot your PC, and then try the process again
Online Search in File Explorer
File Explorer has a new search feature that when you type in the search box, you will see a dropdown menu with a list of suggested files. It not only searches all the files on your local PC, but it will also search for files in your OneDrive account online. You can also right-click one of the search results here to open the file’s location.
Alternative Voice Assistants
Looks like Microsoft are going to let you install third party voice assistants like Amazon Alexa to run on the Windows 10 lock screen.
Ability to Create a Calendar Event from Taskbar
For those people using Windows 10 calendar application, you can now create calendar events directly from the taskbar. All you need to do is click the time on the taskbar to open the calendar view and from there, you can click add a date, time, description and location.
Improved Notification Management
Microsoft have made a few changes here and now you have a few more options on how you want the notification banners to be displayed in the action center.
Also, you can disable the sounds with the notifications via Settings > System > Notifications & Actions pane. Along with this, you now have the ability to sort applications there as well.
Performance Improvements
Microsoft has also advised that there have been a few performance improvements, mainly associated with battery life, better scheduling of CPU resources and lower latency digital inking.
Start Menu Tweaks
Apparently, the start menu is now a little bit more user friendly and when you hover over items in the navigation pane, eg. Settings, Power or Document icons, it will automatically expand them to show you what you are about to click on whereas previously it just showed tooltips.
