NBN Internet Is Getting a Major Speed Boost This September
Here’s What You Need to Know
Australia’s NBN internet is about to get a whole lot faster from the 14th September 2025 as NBN Co starts rolling out a major upgrade to its fixed-line internet services, delivering up to five times faster speeds for many households at no extra cost.
What’s Changing?
The upgrade is part of NBN Co’s “Accelerate Great” initiative, aimed at future-proofing Australia’s internet infrastructure. With the average Aussie household expected to have 44 connected devices by 2030, the demand for faster, more reliable internet is skyrocketing.
Here’s a breakdown of the new speed tiers:
- NBN 100 ➜ NBN 500: 500Mbps download / 50Mbps upload
- NBN 250 ➜ NBN 750: 750Mbps download / 50Mbps upload
- NBN 1000 ➜ NBN 1000: Same download, but now with 100Mbps upload
- New Tier – NBN 2000: 2Gbps download / 200Mbps upload
Who’s Eligible?
To benefit from the upgrade, you’ll need to be on one of the following connection types:
- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
- Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)
If you’re already on an NBN 100, 250, or 1000 plan, your service may be automatically upgraded depending on your provider and some telcos like Exetel and Tangerine have already launched new plans in anticipation.
For those on Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), eligibility may depend on whether your address is part of the Fibre Connect program, which allows free upgrades to FTTP.
What hardware do I need?
With the new faster internet speeds, the main concern is that old routers may not be fast enough and will need to be upgraded.
If the router has Wi-Fi 6, then there is a good chance it will be able to handle the newer speeds but older routers with Wi-Fi 4 or 5 most likely will struggle to transmit at the speeds advertised.
What Will It Cost?
The best part? No price hikes.
NBN Co is not increasing wholesale prices for these faster tiers, and most internet providers are expected to pass those savings on to customers.
